Australian Dental Council Certificate
GOAL: To establish than an overseas trained dentist has an
appropriate standard of knowledge, skills and attitudes expected
for the safe and effective practice of dentistry in Australia.
On attaining the ADC Certificate, an overseas trained dentist
should be able to:
- describe the normal and abnormal human structure, function
and behaviour with particular emphasis on oral health and disease
- discuss the contemporary concepts of dental practice indifferent
settings
- demonstrate a high level of quality care in any of the above
environments
- relate clinical and scientific data to oral and related medical
conditions and in consultation with other health professionals
deliver appropriate, safe and effective care to patients
- recognise the need for referral of patients when this is
in the best interests of the particular patients
- describe the concepts of team dentistry and as a team leader
consult with and provide efficient organisation of auxiliary
members of the dental team
- accurately observe, record and evaluate the information necessary
during assessment
- interpret this information to make an accurate diagnosis
- provide appropriate care based on the diagnosis made and
the information gathered from a client assessment
- evaluate the outcomes of care in order to recommend ongoing
management
- demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning throughout professional
life
- explain the legislative, legal and cultural constraints applicable
to the practice of dentistry
- describe the need for confidentiality, patients' autonomy
and the need for effective communication in the obtaining of
informed consent
- apply the highest ethical standards in the practice of dentistry
- maintain the dignity of all patients and demonstrate a caring
attitude on all occasions
- recognise and respect the legal right to practice as a privilege
